Uniko...way back to the beginning!

Hey & Happy Monday to you all!

With the start of February comes the countdown to the Uniko February Release and this year is our 4th Birthday!

To kick off the celebrations I thought it would be nice to take a look back to when, where and how it all began (you might want to grab a drink, I didn't realise how much I waffled on and apologies to those who have heard all this before!)...

Since as far back as I can remember I have always been creative and enjoyed a variety of crafts. My late Nana and Mother were both creative, enjoying various crafts from sewing to knitting to making cards. So being creative has kinda embedded itself into me!

When I moved to the North East of the UK from the South East back in 2002 I was working as a full time nurse in the NHS, having graduated back in 2000. I was new to the area and made friends at work, but working such long hours I wanted to make friends outside of my job.

With my love of card making and stamping really taking flight in 2008 after the sudden death of my mother I found the wonderful world of blogger and began blogging and joining in with all things stamps over at Hero Arts.

It was soon after, that I found a handmade card class at one of the local further education colleges. It was so much fun getting together with like minded creative people that I went on to do another semester. The tutor of the course Joy, was a lovely creative lady who told me about a Textiles & Surface Design Degree and it was at a Paper Crafts show in Newcastle that I came across a stand with all the course details.

Anyway, back in 2005 I started a BA (Hons) in Textiles & Surface Design. Though the course concentrated more on drawing, sewing and printing across fashion, interiors and the gift industry. I saw more and more links and associations with the paper crafting industry. In 2008 my mother died suddenly and my whole world turned upside down, I was close to quitting everything, including my degree. However, I decided that life was too short and instead of quitting the degree I quit nursing and concentrated my efforts into the degree. It was in my final 2 years that the idea of Uniko was born.

It was during those 2 years that I concentrated my designing towards stamps, patterned papers and developing my business idea. Here are a couple of drawings from those two years which inspired my first 2 clear stamp sets and more recent ones...

So, after all that back in February 2012 on Saturday 11th, Uniko Studio (which it was called then) was open for business.

*Edited to add*

Thanks Sandie, for the reminder to tell you how the name Uniko came about. I am a HUGE fan of Marimekko a Finnish design company and at Uni I was known as 'Marimekko Girl' by a number of my tutors!

One of my all time favourite designs that can be found on various items around the house is by Maija Isola and is called Unikko, seen below.

So partly in homage to my favourite design, memories of going to Finland with my mother and wanting to be 'unique' compared to many of the UK stamp companies/designs that we current when I began the name & company Uniko was born.

I started small launching just 2 clear stamp sets (which are now retired, they may make a reappearance one day as trends change).

After nearly 4 years so much has happened and changed not only with how Uniko has changed, developed and grown with now over 60 products available on the website. But so much has happened to me too, I have got married, had two beautiful babies and moved house AND with all that YOU my friends, loyal customers and blog readers have stuck by me and helped me to keep going and to enjoy bringing you (in small amounts) products to use in your love for paper crafting.

It really does bring me so much joy each time I see a new customer order and a huge grin on my face when I see a card or project around blog land with Uniko products used on it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to each and every one of you that makes this happen.

Now for a little bit of inspiration before I tear up!

As I haven't used either of them for a while, I dusted them off and made a couple of new creations using them...

For this first card I was inspired by a couple of challenges, first up a new to me challenge called Task For Two Tuesday, started by the lovely Birka and Wiebke. Each Tuesday they each post a sketch for you to use and link up your creations. Last weeks sketches can be found HERE and seen below.

I was also inspired by the current Color Throwdown challenge colours seen HERE and below.

I decided my next card needed to be a little more feminine and I 'loved' it up a little using some hearts, and adding them to the centre of the stamped graphic flowers. A couple of the hearts are tiny additions to a couple of the February Release stamps ;)

Again I was inspired by the second Task For Two Tuesday sketch seen HERE and below and also the new challenge over at AAA Cards HERE and seen below.

Now, it wouldn't be a celebration without a prize, would it?! To kick things off how about a £25 eGift certificate to spend over on the Uniko website.

To be in the chance of winning simply add your name to the linky below and I will draw a winner before the release on Thursday 11th February at 8am GMT.

That's all from me today, but I'll be continuing the celebrations tomorrow with more to share. Until then, THANK YOU for everything.

May 2015 Reveal, Release & GIVEAWAY!

Hey & SUPER Happy Monday!

Today is officially release day here at Uniko Studio and hopefully the two sets lining the shelves here at Uniko HQ will clear those Monday Blues!

If you've been joining in on the fun since the Sneak Peeks you might want to check HERE to see if you are a mystery prize winner!

Now grab a drink & let's get to the fun and see these new clear stamp sets in full...

Flower Power #7 £4.95
Copyright Uniko Studio 2015
The next in the Flower Power series is here :) a lovely simple graphic floral and an array of Wedding Anniversary sentiments. The idea of the Flower Power series is that they are all interchangeable and can be mixed and matched all working with any of the themed sentiments using the same fun font.

This set has a small amount of inspiration from the previously released Background Builders: Round In Circles set too.

Next up we have a new masculine themed set...

Nautical Treasures £4.95
Copyright Uniko Studio 2015

It's been a while since I released a masculine themed set, so I thought it time and appropriate with Father's Day coming up next month ;) This is just a small set featuring a selection of the images I originally designed, so don't be surprised to see a follow up set in the near future!

Ok, now all the formal introductions have been done, I have a selection of cards using the new sets...

Another graphic floral card featuring my 'go to' colour combo! Again I used a sentiment from the Nautical Treasures set.

Now for a simple but a little out of my comfort zone of mixing colour and patterns on this masculine card...

I used Background Builders: Round In Circles to create the pattern on the sails. I also adhered the larger 2 sails with foam adhesive for a little dimension.

That's all I had time to make in time for release day, but as tradition holds we have our release day blog hop, simply visit & comment along the hop by midnight Sunday 17th May, to be in the chance of winning the ENTIRE release! If you have already purchased any or all of the release a refund will be given. As it is a small release I will be adding a couple of extra little gifts in with the prize package to make it a little sweeter :)

So, lets see what the AWESOME Design Team have created...

Happy Flowers!

Hey & Happy Weekend!

I made today's card on Thursday during the 'playdate' I had in the studio with my friend Kerry, but I only got round to photographing it today! Lots of the current challenges in blog land have a theme of flowers at the moment, including the CASology challenge HERE.

This is my CAS creation...

I also used the current ColourQ challenge colours seen HERE and below. Love the bright colour pallet, so happy and cheery, especially with all this drab and dreary rain we're having at the moment!

I combined one more challenge for this card, the current CAS(E) this Sketch! layout seen HERE and below. Looking at the circle elements in the sketch I nearly reached for Background Builders: Round In Circles but then decided to use Flower Power #1 as it contains a trio cluster of different sized flowers which I selectively inked and stamped to achieve the sketch layout.

Here is the close up of the sentiment and floral detail...

This afternoon was cot bed building, we achieved one finished cot bed with not too much hassle! I'm kinda lacking in energy now though so it's time to chill on the sofa with hubby and Mr Cat! So, that's all I have to share today, but I will be back tomorrow with another post. Until then, thank you for stopping by today :)

TIME OUT Challenge #3 & Uniko Studio Sponsorship!

* This is my first post of the day, the next Uniko Studio product introduction post will be live at 9am GMT *

Hey!

It sure looks to me like you're all having FUN with the TIME OUT Challenges, so many wonderful entries over the past 2 weeks for the last challenge.

We are back today with the next fortnightly challenge & this time it's a themed challenge with a twist!

* The THEME is Happy Birthday with an optional TWIST of Masculine *

For all you Uniko Studio fans out there you will be happy to hear that we are sponsoring the challenge this fortnight & there are TWO prizes up for grabs for TWO lucky entrants! The prizes are as follows:

For those who enter the challenge & use the TWIST you could be in the chance of winning a £15 Gift Certificate to spend on the website.

AND

The overall winner of the challenge will receive the Today, Tomorrow & Always Time Clear Stamp Set & Matching Designer Dies Graphic Flowers From Time.

This stamp set & matching dies are perfect for the challenge and so I used them to create a couple of cards to inspire you...

For my first card I decided to use the smallest Graphic Flower and matching die along with a mix and match sentiment from A Gift For You and All Occasion Sentiments #2. I decided to use the current Dynamic Duos challenge colours seen HERE and below to help my mojo along!

I started out by die cutting the 3 graphic florals into a layer of Melon Mambo card, I then temporarily adhered the layer to my card base to be able to line up and stamp the coordinating graphic flower in Hawaiian Shores. After stamping the sentiment I then adhered the panel to the white card base using foam adhesive and finished the flowers off with a matching rhinestone.

I decided to make one more card using the same stamp set this time using the optional twist of a masculine card...

For this card I decided to use the current ColourQ challenge colours seen HERE and below to help me along.

I started by stamping the cogs along the left hand side of my white card base using SU! Tangerine Tango ink. I then stamped the pocket watch image onto a white card panel measuring 8.5 X 14 cm in Bermuda Bay ink. The 'Happy Birthday' sentiment is stamped in Hawaiian Shores onto a little strip and mounted to the layer using foam adhesive. I added a few Pumpkin Pie candy dots (as I didn't have anything Peach Parfait small enough) and mounted the layer to the card base using foam adhesive.

OK, that's all from me just now, be sure to visit the TIME OUT Challenge blog for all the details and to see what inspiration the rest of the Design Team and Guest Designer have for you. I will be back again today at 9am GMT for the second Uniko Studio April Release product introduction AND it's a good one - a NEW fave of mine!

Until then, thanks for stopping by :)

Simply Congratulations!

Hey & Happy Monday!

It's a dreary rainy day here, but I am in the studio today full of energy (for now) getting things prepared for the April Release this Friday. I'm also doing 2 classes at The Paperlane on Saturday (details HERE) and there is still one space left on the morning & 4 spaces left in the afternoon.

Anyway, I've a card to share with you all...

I used a couple of challenges to spark my mojo for this card. Firstly I used the current "Less is More" challenge HERE which is a colour challenge & the colour is turquoise.

And for the layout of my card I decided to use the current CAS(E) this Sketch! layout seen HERE and below...

I started out by stamping the flowers from Flower Power #1 in Hawaiian Shores ink onto my white card stock panel. I then stamped & heat embossed the Congratulations sentiment from All Occasion Sentiments #1 in white onto some vellum. Then I mounted the panel onto a turquoise panel and then a white card base.

Ok, I had better crack on and get some work done! I hope you will join me on the blog tomorrow as I share the Sneak Peeks of the April Release :) Until then, thank you for stopping by today.
